Description (physical) |
A cross with four chains is surmounted by a metal circle set on a triangle enclosing a pierced triangle.
Description (iconographical) |
Wonderfully set on ridge used by the Salthouse Sculpture Trail it is set overlooking the road and more importantly the marshes, leading to the sea. The cross recalls Christian burials, with an added poignancy coming from the re-used sea defence timbers and chains. It is difficult to imagine Salthouse as a centre of navigation, since the main channel, shown in John Hunt's Map of 1649 has now been completely wiped out by the sea. Noël Stagg, writing in the 1930s, described its use:'sea-going craft of British, Roman, Angle, Norman, Plantagenet and Tudor days used to sail or pole to Salthouse, Kelling and Weybourne Hards, to load and unload the produce and imports of the countryside. With modern ideas of seagoing craft it is difficult to imagine how at any time such ships could have sailed up channels which have now become obliterated, and which must have been very tortuous, narrow and tidal. In those far-off days the more difficult a harbour was to approach, the safer it became from Vikings, pirates and such other marauders. Also the vessels were flat-bottomed tubs requiring little water to float them, for it was not till the time of the Tudors that ‘beating to windward’ was discovered, necessitating finer lines for the hulls and a consequent deeper draught.' The sculpture forms part of the Salthouse Sculpture Trail was a new venture in 2008 by the North Norfolk Exhibition Project, responsible for the annual July Salthouse Art Exhibitions at St Nicholas. The waymarked paths link the church, Holt, Holt Country Park, and Kelling Heath in a walk of around ten miles, but which can be broken into shorter sections. The Sculpture Trail includes a number of temporary works, but NFnnSAT 001-4 includes the first four permanent installations by local artists. The trail was sponsored by Norfolk Country Cottages, Arts & Business East. North Norfolk District Council, Norfolk County Council
