Description (physical)

Sandlings Walk runs for 60 miles from Ipswich to Southwold and onto Kessingland through the Sandlings, designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty in 1970. It extends from the northern side of the Stour estuary to the east of Ipswich to Kessingland in the north. Henry Tebbutt was commissioned to create Nightjar and moth sculptures at 12 points along the walk beginning at Ipswich (brackets indicate which ones were surveyed): 1.Purdis Heath 2. Rushmere Common 3. Martlesham Heath 4. Sutton Common 5. Hollesley Common 6. Rendlesham Forest (moth on wooden post)) 7. Blaxhall Common 8. North Warren (moth on wooden post) 9. Dunwich Heath (fibreglass nightjar chick on post)10. Dunwich Forest (wooden nightjar outstretched wings on low base) 11. Hinton 12. Southwold (concrete nightjar)

Description (iconographical)

Nightjars were chosen as one of the rare birds found in the area which come out hunting especially for moths at dusk. They come to breed in the Sandlings from May to September before returning to Africa to winter.
